Honda AND YOU: Owner’s StoryThe Kampung BoyWho Never Lost SightOf His DreamsAs a teenage boy living in Kampung Paya, Bukit Mertajam, Jamal used to dream bigthat maybe one day, he would venture beyond the borders of his little village and besomebody. As he sat on the verandah of his home with his younger brother, they madea conscious decision that day – they would learn to construct kampung houses to helpsupport their family and learn to do it well. That was the moment when Jamaluddin Bin Abdullah, 55, now a successful contractorliving in Bukit Mertajam, Seberang Perai, found his calling in life. Initially the two siblingslearned the basics from the village contractor whom they became assistants to. Aftera few years, they grew quite adept at their work and began to take on constructingkampung houses on their own. Soon, word started to spread to neighbouring villages oftheir skills and they began to get more and more work since their prices were reasonableand their workmanship was of superior quality. Jamal’s dreams were on its way.Sensing his calling in life, Jamal as he is better known, then went through a host ofgovernment sponsored contractor courses to further develop his skills. “I worked as04 | with dreams

Honda AND YOU: Dealer’s StoryBUILDINGGREENER VALUESWITH NEW 3S CENTRE“Work hard, serve well. There are no shortcuts to success.” Thosewere the mantra that Ban Lee Heng Motor Sdn Bhd’s ManagingDirector, Johnnie Wong reminded us as we walked out of his newHonda 3S centre. If success is measured by one’s resilience and contribution to society, then Ban Lee Heng has certainly earned their reputation for upholdingHonda’s commitment to achieve Customer Satisfaction No. 1 by beingamong the longest serving dealership in the country. Starting from ahumble beginning of selling bicycles in the late 40’s, Ban Lee Hengevolved continuously with the Honda brand after it was appointed soledistributor in 1976.An authorised 3S centre is able to deliver Sales, Service and Spareparts under one roof, and is an initiative from Honda Malaysia toprovide customers with better value and service. “It is every dealer’sdream to have a 3S centre and we are glad to finally materialise ourdream,” says Johnnie.Indeed, he has every reason to feel pleased. Upon reaching thedealership, you are greeted by a stately glass structure surroundedby bamboo plants which emanates an almost zen-like, minimalisticambience. How ever the lovely new 3S centre provides more than justimproved service, we discovered.“There were many difficult periods that the younger generations will notbe privy to. Surviving through several economic downturns toughenour spirit. This contributes to Ban Lee Heng’s significant growth andimprovements, which enabled us to achieve our dream of being a 3Scentre,” relates Johnnie with gleaming eyes.06 | with dreams“It is penny wise to conserve and use as much natural resources as we canbut we also have to take care of the greenhouse effect.”

BreakthroughConnecting peopleand technologywith the EV-N08 | with dreams

The seats, made out of thin mesh, contribute to the lightness of the car. The EV-N also offers flexibleutility space that looks promising for a mini car.The fabric seat panels can be easily removed fromthe frame so owners can replace it with a design oftheir choice, whether it is sporty, cute, vivid or chic. While it may take years before battery electric vehicles are acommon sight on our roads, Honda’s tradition in vehicle innovationhad inspired our research into electric vehicles since the late 1980’s.More than a decade later, our experimentation and researchbring to fruition the EV-N, a battery electric compact citycommuter. Despite its size, the fun-looking, easy-to-drive minicar has a sufficiently large interior that is comfortable enough tofit four adults. When Honda decided to create aconcept battery electric vehicle forthe Tokyo Motor Show 2009, thedesigner of EV-N, Kanna Sumiyoshi, took design cues from one ofHonda’s classic models, the N360,a front-wheel-drive mini car that wasreleased in 1967.As Honda moves forward in planningnew forms of mobility, size would bean important feature, especially forbattery electric vehicles. A smaller car requires fewer resources, thus operating more efficiently to produce cleaner energies. With this in mind, Sumiyoshi began her design process to makethe EV-N that is not only a right match in our environmentallyconscious times but also a desirable one that is fun to drive. The LOOP device tells the EV-N ownerthe level of electric charge remaining in the vehicleand its parking durationThe EV-N is powered by electricity that is charged usinga solar panel rooftop while the trunk space is in the fronthood where the engine is usually placed. Sumiyoshi and herteam intentionally left out the unnecessary extras to keepthe car as light as possible but maintained some high-utilityfeatures like changeable seat materials and communicationtechnologies that is aimed at signaling pedestrians when itstarts and stops.During the Tokyo Motor Show 2009,Honda Motor Co., Ltd. demonstratedhow the EV-N was used with a LOOPdevice, a communication tool thatis aimed at making the connectionbetween people and mobilityenjoyable. With the LOOP, the EV-Nlights up to provide a signal wheneverthe owner approaches or walks awayfrom the car while also offering otheruseful information in its liquid crystaldisplay to show how much electriccharge remains in the car, its parkingduration and the location where it is parked. The design of the EV-N represents the direction that Honda istaking in the area of battery electric vehicles. We hope to continuededicating ourselves to dreaming up new ideas and using ourtechnologies to turn them into fun mobility products for everyone. The instrument panel is stylishly simple with itsslender liquid display inside the unadorned interior. When the EV-N starts up, lights in the front grille light up to display a “happy” smile while a pattern offlashing lights move from left to right to signal the pedestrian of its actions.with dreams | 09

Engine Man, Thayalakumaran, 32“I check data such as fuel pressure and brakingtechniques of the driver via G-force sensors toknow what is really happening in the engine andhow to improve it,” he explains. “The challengeis checking and diagnosing the problems inthe shortest time possible.” More popularlyknown as Kumar, he is among the seniorHMRT members who were sent to the Mugenheadquarters in Japan for training in 2007.The HMRT pit crewThe pit crew can be categorized into two entities: Thetechnical crew and the non-technical crew. The technicalcrew is directly involved with physically maintaining thecar while the non-technical crew takes care of other needsthat may arise during the race.Overseeing the pit crew is the Pit Manager, who playsa crucial role in organizing the car build up, deciding onthe optimum race strategy and communicating with thedrivers during their break to better understand the car’sperformance.Tyre Man, Borhan Selamat, 42The tyre man inspects the tyre conditionsand determines the optimum pressure andtemperature of the 15 or more sets of tyresprior to the race. “During the race, we normallychange the front tyres about four times moreoften than the rear ones,” he explains. “Icommunicate with the Chief Mechanic anddecide what tyre changes are required duringthe race.”Fuel Man, Muhammad FaizulMuhammad Ghazali, 28As the first person to get his hands on the carduring a pit stop, his role is an important buthazardous one. “Did you know that adjustingthe height of the tower and getting into the rightposition to handle the 2kg hose is important inrefueling efficiently? It is all carefully thoughtout. I also ensure that the refueling tower is ingood condition to prevent leakage,” he shares.Chief Mechanic, Irwan Abd.Hamid, 30As the chief in charge of the technical team,Irwan keeps the team together to minimizemistakes at the pit. “At our Shakedown thisyear, we secretly simulated a problem with thecar that caught the crew off-guard. We wantedto test if they were ready for the real action. I ampleased to say that our manager and advisorswere very satisfied with the results because theteam was well-prepared,” he says proudly.Pit Wall Chief, Khairul Nizam Rahmat, 25Khairul’s team comprises of two members whoclock the lap time of the car outside the pit laneand relate their data to the Chief Mechanic. “Iupdate the pit board with remaining lap timesto signal to the driver so that he pits in at thecorrect time. It is really challenging to stay alertthroughout the 12-hour race so we take turns toperform our duties in case one of us gets tired,”he says. The Technical Crew• Mechanics: Led by the Chief Mechanic, the teamcomprises of 4 main crews who ensures the entirecar’s components, with the exception of the engine, are at an optimum condition throughout the race.• Tyre man: Prepares the right type of tyres requiredfor the race and ensures the tyres’ pressure andtemperature are at an optimum level. Honda introduced the HSV-010 GT in January this yearto replace the NSX-GT’s legendary run in the Super GTInternational Series and have since completed up to Round6 in August at Suzuka Circuit. The HSV-010 GT teams werehere in Sepang International Circuit earlier this June for theSuper GT International Series Malaysia, Round 4.The stifling heat at 34°C proved to be one of the biggerchallenges to conquer as it was the first time the HSV-010 GTraced in a circuit outside Japan. It was a close battle for theHSV-010 GT teams who displayed their intense racing spirit tofinish among the top, with Weider HSV-010 GT emerging 3rdon the podium while Raybrig HSV-010 GT took the 5th place. Many people think of its predecessor, the NSX, as a ‘cornering machine’ andHonda was determined to build an ‘ultimate cornering machine’ with the HSV-010 GTby combining new technologies with the proven technology from the NSX.Breaking away from the mid-engine layout of the NSX, theHSV-010 GT is presented as a front-engine rear-drive SuperGT machine in a new chassis. Fans will notice many changesand improvements compared with its predecessor. Besidesthe engine, the HSV-010’s chassis rigidity is enhanced whileat the rear, a longer exhaust was incorporated to improve theoverall power and ensure a significant exhaust sound.Regarding other improvements, Honda R&D Co., Ltd. ChiefEngineer, Masahiko Matsumoto, explained in an interviewduring the Super GT pit tour at Sepang that, “The torqueoutput was increased and we have improved its downforce capability. However, we want to emphasize that theHSV-010 GT meets specifications required for production, particularly the positioning of the engine and rear-brakes.These requirements are important to meet Super GT’s strictregulations.”The HSV-010 GT teams will be competing in the final roundsof this season’s championship with the last leg ending atHonda’s home circuit, Twin Ring Motegi Circuit, before a nonchampionshipspecial round concludes the season in FujiSpeedway this November.with dreams | 21
