Pittsburgh zoo welcomes new cheetahs, hosting naming contest
The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has five new cheetah cubs and there’s a contest to name them.
The zoo announced Friday it had welcomed the five female cubs and their mother, Naya, from the Metro Richmond Zoo. The cubs are about eight months old.
The zoo is hosting a naming contest open to the public to vote for a theme of names. The options, according to a news release, include “Pittsburgh Pride,” with names like Liberty, Bloom and Schenley; “Girl Power,” with names like Athena, Pandora, Joan and others; and “Africa,” with names including Bisa, Kali and Malika.
Voting will take place at pittsburghzoo.org/naming-contest until 5 p.m. July 10. Once a theme is chosen, animal care specialists will choose names within that theme.
Naya and her cubs are on display at the zoo’s cheetah exhibit.
